Waves break over an Italian oil tanker, submerged by waves, that ran aground near Syracuse, in southern Sicily on March 11. The ship ran aground in high winds and seas off Sicily, the coastguard said, adding that the 19 crew were taken off by helicopter amid worsening weather.

An empty Italian tanker ran aground on rocks in bad weather off the Sicilian coast on Saturday and all 19 crew members were rescued, the coastguard said.
The 127-metre-long (415-feet-long) Gelso M was heading for the Sicilian port of Augusta, home of an oil refinery and chemical complex, to take on fuel.
The coastguard said the tanker, listed as an oil/chemical tanker, was not carrying cargo at the time of the accident.
The ship had taken on water in its engine room and plans were being made to move it from the rocks, the coastguard said.

Hospital Ship

A hospital ship is a ship designated for primary function as a floating medical treatment facility or hospital; most are operated by the military forces (mostly navies) of various countries, as they are intended to be used in or near war zones.
Attacking a hospital ship is a war crime, however, belligerent navies are entitled the right to board such ships for inspections.


Hospital ships were covered under the Hague Convention X of 1907.^[2] Article four of the Hague Convention X outlined the restrictions for a hospital ship:

• Ship must be clearly marked and lighted as a hospital ship
• The ship should give medical assistance to wounded personnel of all nationalities
• The ship must not be used for any military purpose
• The ship must not interfere with or hamper enemy combatant vessels
• Belligerents, as designated by the Hague Convention, can search any hospital ship to investigate violations of the above restrictions
• Belligerents will establish the location a hospital ship

According to the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, a hospital ship violating legal restrictions must be duly warned and given a reasonable time limit to comply. If a hospital ship persists in violating restrictions, a belligerent is legally entitled to capture it or take other means to enforce compliance. A non-complying hospital ship may only be fired on under the following conditions:

• Diversion or capture is not feasible
• No other method to exercise control is available
• The violations are grave enough to allow the ship to be classified as a military objective
• The damage and casualties will not be disproportionate to the military advantage.

Baj (Barge)

Baj (Bahasa Inggeris: barge) atau tongkang ialah sebuah bot besar yang bahagian bawahnya datar yang digunakan untuk membawa barang atau muatan yang berat di sungai, terusan dan laut[1]. Ada baj yang tidak mempunyai pendorongan sendiri dan perlu ditunda dengan bot tunda. Pada zaman dahulu, binatang penunda juga digunakan untuk menunda baj-baj di terusan sebelum digantikan oleh mesin penunda berlandasan pada awal Revolusi Perindustrian.

Hari ini, baj digunakan untuk mengangkut barangan pukal yang bernilai rendah, kerana kos pengangkutan menggunakan baj adalah sangat rendah. Baj juga digunakan untuk barangan berat dan kontena. Baj tipikal adalah berukuran 195 × 35 kaki (59.4 m × 10.6 m), dan mampu membawa muatan sehingga 1,500 tan. Objek yang sangat besar biasanya diangkut dalam beberapa bahagian sebelum disambung semula di destinasi, contohnya kren dermaga dan pelantar minyak.

Baj juga penting dalam operasi kontena di tengah laut. Pelabuhan Hong Kong merupakan satu-satunya pelabuhan di dunia yang menjalankan operasi pemunggahan dan pemuatan kontena dari kapal kontena ke baj atau sebaliknya, di tengah laut.
